Whistle Buoy is a new brewery and tasting room that opened at 63-560 Johnson St in Market Square in the summer of 2019. They offer fresh, local beer in a small system for their products to be consumed on-site. In particular, they will serve taster flights, 14 oz and 20 oz options, as well as local ciders and a select menu of cocktails, as well as soda, kombucha and coffee. It will also offer light, prepackaged snacks and encourage people to bring in food from local restaurants, or use Skip The Dishes. The core of their business is focused on creating a local community space that brings people together to enjoy their common love for beer.
The Property
The taproom fits 51 people, while their outdoor patio can fit 57 people. Unlike many local craft brewers, Whistle Buoy has decided not to purchase a canning line or get its beer in local liquor stores. Instead, they offer small on-site retail options in the form of bottles and on-demand growler fills.
The Team at Whistle Buoy
The team behind Whistle Buoy is made up of young entrepreneurs who are passionate about keeping things local. During the application process, Whistle Buoy spent a week consulting with their neighbours, including a nearby pub known as The Drake – whose team was a huge support. Central to their core values of community, Whistle Buoy’s goal is to create a micro-stimulus business, where the money is invested back into the local community.
“We all live in the community, and it will be owner-operated.” – Iwan Williams, Operations Manager
